LOS ANGELES – In a historic first, the Recording Academy has introduced a new category honoring songs that sound like a good time until you actually pay attention to the lyrics and realize they’ve been quietly wrecking your soul. The inaugural Best Unsuspecting Sad Song award has been given to none other than LCD Soundsystem’s Someone Great, the indie-electronic anthem that has fooled countless listeners into dancing through their existential despair.
“We wanted to recognize songs that emotionally devastate you only after you’ve already been vibing for a full minute,” said Grammy spokesperson Lana D. Pression. “And no song does that better than Someone Great—a track that somehow makes grief catchy.”
The Competition Was Stiff
This year’s nominees included other deceptively upbeat heartbreak anthems:
🎵 Hey Ya! – OutKast (Did you ever really listen to the lyrics?)
🎵 Dancing On My Own – Robyn (The happiest song about being absolutely miserable)
🎵 Semi-Charmed Life – Third Eye Blind (A song about… well, have you Googled it?)
🎵 Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People (A cheerful little number about—wait, what?)
However, Someone Great ultimately took home the gold, with judges citing its perfect blend of upbeat instrumentation and soul-crushing lyrics about loss as the deciding factor.

James Murphy Accepts With a Heavy Sigh
LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy accepted the award in a predictably bittersweet fashion. “I guess I should say thank you?” Murphy said, nervously adjusting his glasses. “I mean, I never wanted to be the soundtrack to your late-night emotional spirals, but hey, here we are.”
He then promptly left the stage, likely to go rewatch The Royal Tenenbaums alone in a dimly lit room.
A Category We Needed All Along
Many music fans praised the new Grammy category, arguing that it’s been long overdue. “Some songs trick you,” said one tear-stained indie fan. “You’re out here thinking you’re having a moment, and then BAM—you realize you’re mourning a relationship that ended five years ago.”
Following the success of this category, the Recording Academy is considering additional emotionally specific awards, including:
🏆 Most Likely to Cause a Quarter-Life Crisis
🏆 Best Song to Cry To in Your Car at a Red Light
🏆 Best Lyrics That Absolutely Wreck You at the Worst Possible Moment
As for Someone Great, expect its streams to skyrocket as a whole new generation of listeners unsuspectingly adds it to their “chill vibes” playlists, only to regret it midway through.
