Residents Demand Giant Mosquito Statue to Honor the City’s True Icon

By Buzz Woodley, The Houston Throb

In a move to honor Houston’s most resilient resident, a group of locals has launched a petition for a giant mosquito statue to be erected downtown. “They’re annoying, but they’re ours,” said petition organizer, Annette Biting. “No other city can say they have mosquitoes like we do.”

The statue, envisioned to be 50 feet tall and made entirely of recycled mosquito nets, would stand proudly in Discovery Green, representing the city’s ability to survive both heatwaves and endless swarms. “We want something that embodies Houston’s spirit,” said artist Hector Stinger, who’s already sketching the design. “A mosquito doesn’t quit—it keeps coming, no matter what.”

Critics of the idea argue that the statue might attract even more mosquitos, but proponents insist it’s a fitting tribute. “It’ll be a symbol of strength, resilience, and constant itching,” said one supporter.

The petition has already garnered thousands of signatures, and some are even suggesting it be renamed the “Buzzing Monument.”

“We have rockets, but we also have the real Texas fighter: the mosquito,” said Biting. “It’s about time they got their due.”
